THINGS TO KNOW WHEN BUYING FIRST HOME?

Okay so I plan to buy my first home this coming winter. What are somethings I should know when I make this purchase, also how long does the buying process usually take? I was thinking of putting down 5% and doing the 30 year plan, I know doing it that way will cost more, am I allowed to pay more than whats due each month?
