I want to buy a home in the next year, but I will be the only one listed on the mortgage because my husband's credit is poor. We have a joint bank account. A friend advised that we would need to split up our finances at least six months in advance of applying for a mortgage because it gets hairy when there's only one person on the mortgage but two sources of income in the bank account the mortgage broker reviews. I started thinking, though - what if we just cashed his weekly paychecks rather than deposit them? We pretty much use cash anyway so it would be cutting out an extra step. Would the mortgage broker be able to tell that we had checks cashed, or would this fix the issue so my husband wouldn't have to get a separate bank account?
