Can the average Canadian salary pay for rent?

My boyfriend and I are looking into getting a home together some day, were of course eager. I matured for this when I was 15 and now i'm 18 so I've been ready for my chosen home maker position for a while. He's not very mature and isn't being realistic in his getting a Job he also owe's the bank 180$ Where I have 9220.36 in my account. Right now I could afford first and last month if we get a townhouse. I like houses and apartments so townhouse. But we need an income if we plan to furnish and live there. I'll also be going on ODSP in the next few months so thats my income. I'm wondering though with an average job like tim hortons or some thing low level would his salary afford a monthly rent? What about if we decide to get a mortgage instead? How much money would we need on estimate monthly to afford the cost of living?
