Employer said something that really bothered me, am I the only one who feels this way?
I start this new job tomorrow, and yea I am kinda excited that I have a job that's close to home and for the most part no one will bother me. But during the interview when we got to the portion about pay, I said I would be comfortable making $20 an hour for what they want me doing. She said she will start me at $16 an hour. Of course I had a problem with this since my last job paid $20 an hour. She said after 90 days we will re-evaluate it but I can't promise you $20.
Now here is when she really bothered me. She made the comment after her last statement saying:
"you come from a generation that feels as if your simply entitled to more money, just because you want it, im not paying someone more money just because they want it." and she said it with a very aggravated tone.
This really bothers me, because I have been completely poor my whole life. Not poor as in don't have a new car, but poor as in as a kid I remember going to the church to get food because my parents couldn't buy any. When I was 13 I had to hunt and fish and hope that I got something so I could eat that day. My family went through periods where we didn't know where our next meal was coming from for at least 2 weeks. Im married now with no kids. My mortgage is $355 a month and thats the only debt I have. No cable, no smartphones. Just mortgage, electric, grocery bill, gas, internet (until I finish my degree), and the cheapest insurance I can find. Not even a car payment. $16 an hour barely pays my bills.
Added (1). Im not looking to be rich. Simple things like fishing and being outside makes me happy. But unfortunately, it doesn't pay bills that I am forced to pay. I am not a person who feels entitled, I just want to be paid enough money to actually pay my bills and not starve, im so tired of struggling.
Added (2). I want to add, that before I made $20 an hour, I was making $10 an hour. And I do everything with no help from anyone. I was in the military before that and the military might not pay much, they at least gave me food and a place to sleep. I'm grateful for having some form of pay, yes I agreed to it because I know I can get by, im only taking this job because Im forced to have insurance or pay a fine i can't afford. Im really bothered by her statement and she is basically using it as an excuse.
