Independent Mortgage Advisor?

I have a degree in Accounting and Finance but after University I got a criminal conviction now I cannot get a job in a financial institution. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of becoming a independent mortgage adviser/broker? I am planning on taking the exams and registering with the relevant body (think it is FCA) but does anyone know if they'll let me register?
Added (1). My conviction was for Possession of a Class A drug (Ecstasy) - Please no nonsense about I shouldn't have done it bla bla bla
