Is it better to try to get a mortgage through a lender or directly through USDA?

My husband and I are starting to go through the motions of buying our first home. We know nothing. We are very nervous and I desperately want to do this right. So we have decided we want to try for a USDA loan I just read that I can apply directly through them. Is it better to have a lender or do it directly through USDA?
