Why is this economy so bad? You can graduate in a high demand field and still not have a job?

I am totally at my wits end on this job market. I've applied to about 100 jobs across the country and locally since graduation and have only had a contracting position for a couple months with my engineering degree. It's been over a year since graduation, and I rarely get a shot at a full-time position. Even so-called "entry level jobs" require 1-2 years experience.

I did everything I could. I graduated with a 3.8 gpa, honors, 2 internships, and a thesis from a well known school. I've also done some professional development and that contracting job. Still nothing. I'm broke, in debt, and a boomerang child. It's like you have to know someone to get a job…

This is ridiculous. How can I gain new skills like computers or trades to expand my ability to earn a living, or how could I get a small business loan?
