If I assume the mortgage on my own, will my wife's credit improve?

I currently share a mortgage with my wife. We have had a hard time during the recession and missed a few payments. It is bringing our credit scores down dramatically and now we are unable to be approved for anything. If I assume the mortgage (if that's even possible), will she be relinquished of these bad credit woes?
