Who is responsive for a persons debt when a person dies?

My father has stage 4 very advanced cancer, the doctor gave him 6 months, even chemo doesn t seem to be helping much, So he will eventually be put into hospice. After death who is responsible for paying the medical bills and all other bills that he has accumulated while he s alive? He has a mortgage that he just started last year, I read online that the banks would take the house and sell it, but that would only pay off the house loan, and what would happen to everything else? He also has life insurances some which is on my mothers name and some on mine, they don t have any joint accounts or anything and are divorced, when he dies will the creditors come after me and my mother because we inherited the life insurance money? Will we also lose the house? And what about all the medical bills? All that s under his name is the house which is not even paid for at all, I m confused about this.
