Why is good credit more important to landlords than good payment history?

Why is good credit more important to landlords than good payment history?
Added (1). My wife and I don't have great credit but we pay our rent every month on time. We have records proving that, but landlords only seem to care about credit. Our current landlord didn't pay his mortgage for 5 years and got foreclosed. We have maybe two months to find another place but no one seems interested in the fact that we're trying hard to fix our credit, or that we pay on time every month, they only care about who we used to be. Why is that?
