Is $42,000 a year enough to live comfortably in the UK?

I am considering taking a job in the UK and my salary would be $42,000 a year and a quarters allowance to help with rent/mortgage and utilities. I have no idea what amount this would be. With a base salary of $42,000 or 26,892 pounds, how comfortable would I be? I am single. I just don't want to put myself in a financial bind.
