How long do you need to work before getting a mortgage in Ireland?

i've moved to the republic of Ireland from the UK on a full time permanent work position, currently I'm renting but I would love to get my own place so I can get a couple of dogs and make the place my own.
in the UK my parents have warned me I would need to be working for over 3 years before I can get a mortgage, is this still the case for the republic or Ireland?
