Is Foreclosure or Short Sale an option?

Please, I am looking for some advice on these two processes…

I and the wife are currently in a Condo that we took out a mortgage for roughly 8 years ago. The value and all has been lost to where we owe more than it's worth at the current time…

There are many, many personal reasons why I want us to simply walk away and go stay with some family for awhile. I want to stay with some family and help them out as well as kinda rebuild ourselves personally…

we have never to this moment missed a payment.

I want to walk away from this place though and start over.

Is Foreclosure or Short Sale something I can ask for, and have it happen?
