Exactly how does a union job hurt me?

I'm a janitor, a floor care technician. I mainly strip, wax & burnish floors. Sometimes I demolish & lay new flooring too.
When we lay or demo vct, we get a little extra. I'm in my 11th year with this company, my base pay is not even $11 per hour. I have no health insurance. This company is just below the size threshold for Obamacare. It was not until 10 years of service that I got any paid time off. Sick, vacation, personal, whatever is one half percent of the hours you worked the previous year. That means 10.4 hours paid time off, after 10 freaking years! Almost nobody gets it!
The economy being what it is, I've had to settle for what I can get. I'm a homeowner, because in the past, I did have a more affluent life.
So around this time every year, they announce openings for the school districts in the county. Janitors and other hourly staff are hired through the county support school system, where they teach votec, special ed, etc. The past few years, they have not offered any full time, permanent janitorial jobs. Just temporary & part time. I have a friend that got one back in 2011. I think that was the last full time offered. He's still not at top of scale, but gets 2 weeks vacation, 5 sick/personal days, health insurance &, $18.65 per hour! Mostly day work, no overnights. Rarely a Saturday (automatic OT) and never a Sunday.
This year there are 9 openings. I'm hoping to land one & live like a human being! How is that a bad thing? If it wasn't for CSEA it wouldn't exist.
Added (1). none to be found, can't take the hit on my house. Paid $94k in 1998. In 2005 it was inflated to $170k. Today, back to about $100k. I will own it free and clear 12 years after refi in 2012 at lower interest rate 15 year mortgage.
