We have an insurance claim and the check was issued to both us and the mortgage company (standard policy as I understand) however my husband is a carpenter and actually works for the contractor we had provide the estimate for repairs. He wants to do the repairs himself to save the contractor markup but the mortgage company is insisting that we are not allowed to do self repairs and that they can withold any payments if we do. I understand that they want to make sure the repairs are done properly, but my husband is qualified to do this kind of work. Is it legal for them to force us to go through a contractor and pay the higher markuped price?
