My husband and I are trying to get our first mortgage loan. We submitted our application and the loan officer said we can't go any further until we remove a dispute that shows on my husband's credit. The dispute involves a past due amount for an apartment lease we had back in 2008. That amount was paid in full but somehow it still made it to collections. When I noticed that it was on his credit report, I immediately contacted the apartment complex and they admitted it was a mistake and they sent proof to the collection agency that the account had been paid in full. I asked them to forward me everything, so I also have the proof that this was wrongfully placed in collections. However, now that we are trying to get a mortgage, it apparently STILL shows on his credit but it shows that it's in dispute. At this point, I don't know who to contact.
Should I contact the credit bureaus? The collection agency? Or the apartment complex leasing office?
Upon getting this situation taken care of, how long will it take for this to no longer show on the credit report so that we can continue with the loan process?
