Can you get a mortgage when self employed?

Me and my boyfriend want to buy a house together next year and he is in a stable full time job as a fire fighter.
I am a nursing assistant at a general hospital and I really don't like it there and want to leave to go and work at a smaller district hospital that I used to work at before. I still have a bank contract there so I could just give in my notice at the general hospital and basically be self employed at the district hospital. I will still work full time hours and even extra if I choose to but I basically won't get paid if I don't work. I still get a pension but no holiday/ maternity allowance.

My question is someone told me you have to be in a consistent contracted job for at least 6 months before being accepted for a mortgage. Is this true? Will we not be able to get a mortgage if I am not contracted somewhere?

I will still get wage slips coming in showing proof of income etc but it would be a self employed set up.

I don't want to leave this job even though I hate it if it is going to jeopardise our chances of becoming home owners.

Thank you!
