Can a person have bought a home and not have the deed in his name?

I am asking for my neighbor…

He had been renting a condo and 'bought' it from his landlord. The landlord provided the mortgage and my neighbor is making 'mortgage' payments to the landlord for a few years now.

But the deed is still in the landlord's name.

He said he has documents indicating the agreement… But has never been to a lawyer…

is it possible to buy a house this way? With the previous owner maintaining the deed until the mortgage is paid in full?
