Joining the military JUST to retire in 20 years?

Please tell me if this is a totally stupid idea or if this is actually a major contributing factor to deciding whether or not to join the military. It is the only career that makes it possible to retire in 20 years (if you join in your 20s, you'll retire in your 40s as opposed to 60s in the civilian world) and you will receive 50% of your monthly pay that you got in the military. Now, if this was the main reason for joining, would you say that's a good enough reason? Or is that a stupid reason to join? I am so jealous of my friend who is medically retired from the military at age 28 after serving just 9 years and he has it made, and I see other people who retire in their 40s and don't have to work again if they don't want to. Whereas other people are pushing 65 and finally being able to retire, but some don't even live that long.
