Lease says no pets but landlord said pet was okay?

When signing my lease I noticed there was a no pets policy. I asked my landlord and he said "something like a small dog you can carry is fine". Nothing in writing; but it sounded like he was pretty lax on the policy.

I got a kitten a month after moving. We've been keeping him in the bathroom during the day and letting him roam at night while we're present.

Management called and said the owners are having a 'mortgage inspection' on Friday and need to be let in to our apt. Should I be worried this is a ploy to check and see if we have a cat?
