Is it possible to file a claim with two insurance companies at the same time?

My house was burglarized last week. I filed a claim with my insurance company. But unbeknownst to me, our mortgage company had another insurance company that we've been paying on via escrow and my wife had filed a claim with that insurance company as well. Is this allowed? Don't insurance companies share information so things like this wouldn't happen?
