When getting laid off in a union, will that negatively effect your work history for buying a home?

My boyfriend and I are looking at buying a home, but he is trying to get work with a union. A requirement of the mortgage is that we have two years of work in similar fields. If he sticks with the union, and gets laid off periodically, will this be considered a gap in employment and start the two years over again?
