Can I still buy a house with bad credit?

After a divorce, I wasn't able to pay credit cards and I have a lot of outstanding debt. I have been renting a house for 3 years and I would like to buy a house now with my new husband. His credit is better than mine but I make more money than he does. If I am on the mortgage, we can use both of our incomes, but then my credit rating drags us down. If we don't use my income, then we don't make enough. Any suggestions?
