How expensive is property in Canada?

I haven't been in Canada for a while and I will be going back there to settle down. I'm unaware of the actual prices of a good house and what I can get.

I wanted to ask what can I get within $200,000? Can I get a nice big house with 3 bedrooms in a nice area? Would I alone be able to pay off the house mortgage with a good job? What are the type of expenses included in buying such a house (Tax, buying fees etc.)? Would prices go down anytime in the next ten years?

My mother always advises me to buy a luxury apartment instead because she says maintaining a house alone is too difficult. Is this true? Would it be better for me to buy a luxury apartment than a house?
