Child support with a part time job?

My BF pays child support regularly but lately his commission has taken a dive and after paying the support money is tight. He has always wanted to go into nursing for more steady income but is worried that he won't be able to pay full child support during the time in school that he'd have to do clinicals and go to a part time job. I know it will be up to the judge when that time comes but does anyone have any experience with this? Are they just going to look at him as though he's trying to dodge making a full payment?
Added (1). Let me add then that I plan to support us when he can no longer keep a full time job but I can't pay our bills/mortgage and his child support as well.
