I feel like i get screwed every year. In 2015 i bought a house and installed an energy efficient furnace, filed jointly and claimed 0. I owed 82 dollars in federal and got 300 back for the state i even went to 2 tax professionals who said everything was right. My co worker owns a home and is not married but she says she always gets 3 to 4K back every year… She does not have kids. Last year I got half of what she got (still pretty good but why don't I get 3K?) Does filing joinlty make you get less? Me and my husband claim 0 and pay interest on student loans and mortgage.
