Can you rent if you have prior criminal convictions?

Hello, this is kind of an embarrassing question, but my husband got into a lot trouble when he turned 18 and part of the convictions flow into when he turned 19. Long story short he got wrapped up with some bad influences and minors and he took the wrap for most of everything because he was one of two adults. Anyways it has now been four years since he was convicted. He has had the major convictions expunged, but still has misdemeanors. We are now having a hard time trying to find somewhere to rent and I truly believe it was because of this. He has a ged. Got his cdl. Completely turned his life around and it on the right track (or we wouldn't be together). Is there a program that can help people restore their reputation? We realm need to find a place and probably aren't ready to attempt a mortgage being that I still want to go to school next spring and right now renting would be a lot more manageable for the time being
Added (1). It doesn't have to be rude. We are good people. He got mixed up in a bad crowd and made bad decisions when he was younger. Just like *everyone else* and has since come back from his mistakes, and is trying to turn his life around completely. I was just wondering if there were any programs that helped with this nature of situations, like a staffing agency will help people who have a hard time finding a job, receive employment. Obviously its not a van or trailer park that is only in our future.
