401(k) or IRA for young retiree with pension. Any good options?

I recently retired at a very young age with a pension. I own my own house so I don't pay rent or mortgage. I have my bills set up for auto pay. And after buying all the necessities of life and a modest amount of leisure spending I'm left with about $1000 a month in disposable income. Is it worth it to set up a retirement account for later down the road, and if so what is the best option? Since I don't have an employer there would be no scenario for account matching. Or should I just drop money in a discount brokerage and invest in stocks directly on a whim. Because of my situation I do have a high tolerance for risk.
