Can i build credit through rental payments?

If i get an apartment, is there some way i can build credit with it? I have no credit at all, which could be a problem, although its worth looking into.

My main goal is to build credit. I read that opening a credit card doesnt impact it too much, and that mortgages and auto loans are what affect your credit score the most.

Is this true?
Any help would be appreciated.
